DIY Giant General Tso Chicken

All of our friends and family know when we order Chinese Take Out we're grabbing up an order of General Tso.   Always going back, and back again, for extra servings of our favorite dish.  Today's recipe solves that age old problem of being hungry after eating Chinese food with our HUGE take out dish of our top pick menu item.  General Tso.

This recipe is very big. Where we do recommend you give this a try.... possibly consider this as a super delicious meal prep idea in addition to an in credible food art project.

if you're looking to make the dish regular size cut the recipe down a third and cube the chicken smaller then follow the instructions the same.  


Ingredients:
  • 6 Chicken Breasts
  • Oil for Deep Frying
  • White Rice
  • Broccoli
Marinade
  • 6 Egg Whites beaten
  • 9 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 9 tbsp cornstarch
  • 9 tbsp rice vinegar
Dredge
  • 3 Cups Flour
  • 3 Cups Cornstarch
  • 3 tsp Baking Powder
  • 3 tsp Salt
  • 9 Tbsp Marinade
Sauce
  • 9 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 9 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 6 teaspoons hoisin sauce
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 9 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 tablespoon cornstarch

    Instructions: 

    1. Trim the fat and cut the chicken breast in half.  Set aside.
    2. In a large mixing bowl whip egg whites until frothy.  Whisk in the rest of the marinade ingredients until combined.  Reserve 9 Tbsp for the Dredge.  Place the chicken into same bowl and allow to marinade for at-least 1 hour. 
    3. Sift together the dredge ingredients with a fine strainer.  Mix well to combine with a fork. 
    4. Use tongs to place the marinaded chicken into the dredge.  Give it a double batter by placing back into the marinade and then back into the dredge.  Place on parchment paper to rest before deep frying. 
    5. Preheat the Deep Fryer to 350°F.
    6. While the fryer preheats whip together the sauce by whisking the sauce ingredients in a large bowl.  Set aside.
    7. Deep fry the breaded chicken for about 7-10 minutes.  Careful not to over crowd the fryer and temp the chicken, to make sure cooked through at an internal temperature of 165°F.  When cooked set on a wire rack or paper towel.
    8. Bring a large wok, or sauce pan, to the stove top and to medium high heat.  Place the chicken and then pour the sauce over top.  Stirring occasionally.  Keep on the heat until you see the sauce thicken throughout and the chicken is fully coated.
    9. Plate with rice and steamed broccoli.  Enjoy!

    DIY EASY General Tso Chicken

    In certain times you may find chicken breast not available at the store, or at home, but you do find chicken nuggets, canned chicken, and/or chicken noodle soup at your finger tips.  If that is the case... this recipe gives you the opportunity to elevate those foods by making them into General Tso chicken.

    Ingredients:
    • Oil for Deep Frying
    • General Tso Sauce
    • Chicken Nuggets or Canned Chicken
    • 1 Cup Flour
    • 1 Cup Corn Starch
    • 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
    • 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
    • White Rice
    • Broccoli
      THINGS YOU’LL NEED:

      INSTRUCTIONS:

      1. Preheat Deep Fryer to 350°F.
      2. Cook the chicken via packaging directions. 
      3. Coat in General Tso Sauce in a medium bowl.
      4. Make dry batter by combining flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and baking powder in a large bowl. 
      5. Place chicken in dry batter and coat
      6. Deep Fry for 3-5 minutes
      7. Serve overtop rice with broccoli
